Creating a simulation case

With the Create Case form, which is the first step of the Simulation Case workflow, you can create a new simulation case, or set an existing case as active. To open the form, select simulate > IMEX or GEM or STARS > Create Case. The main purpose of the form is to assign the 3D grid to be used in the simulation.

The form also contains the option to assign a Simulation Concept (see step 2 below). Creating a concept and assigning it here is required when you want to propagate geological uncertainties to dynamic simulation. For more on the simulation concept, see The Simulation Concept workflow.

To import an existing simulation case, use the Import Case button in the same strip.
  1. Simulation case  Select Create new to create a new simulation case and type the name in the field below, or select an existing case from the drop-down menu. The drop-down list includes only cases in the Case Explorer. When creating or selecting an existing case at the top of the form, the selected case becomes the active simulation case for all the buttons in the Simulation Case button-group of the IMEX, GEM or STARS sub-strip.

A simulation case can be renamed by double clicking the case name in the Case Explorer.
  2. Under Source, select how you want to select the 3D grid to be used in your simulation (3D Grid or Simulation Concept), and then proceed with the activated selection fields below. You have two options:

    • 3D Grid  When you select this option, you can select a 3D grid from the 3D grid drop-down list below. All 3D grids in your solution of geometrical type JewelGrid, Regular Pillars or Tartan, can be selected. The selected grid will be the grid used for your simulation case.
    • Simulation Concept  When you select this option, you can select a simulation concept from the Simulation concept drop-down that gets activated below, and use the 3D grid that has been assigned to the concept as your simulation grid. The properties selected for the concept on the concept > Simulation Concept > Assign Data form, will auto-populate the respective data tables of the simulation case. Assigning a simulation concept is required when you want to propagate geological uncertainties to dynamic simulation via the Simulation Study. For more on simulation concepts, see Simulation Concept workflow. For more on the Simulation Study, see Simulation Study workflow.
    • You can access the concept > Simulation Concept > Assign Data form by clicking the pencil icon . If you make any changes on the Assign Data form, make sure to (re-)Apply the Create Case form before you close it, in order to propagate the (updated) selections to the simulation case.
  3. Set the simulation start date by typing it in manually or selecting from the calendar that can be opened by clicking on the calendar button.
  4. If the simulation scenario requires it, a restart state from a base simulation case can be selected. The simulation case must be in the same simulation case folder as the current simulation case.

Restart source case  The simulation case that created the restart state. The simulation case must be in the current simulation case folder.

Restart timestep  Specify the timestep from which the simulation run should restart from.
